Are you smarter than Stinky?

Two sons of a wealthy Arab Sheikh were each overwhelmingly proud of their own horse. When the Sheikh passed away in death they found he had left instructions that his sons were to a have a race and the one whose horse loses the race would inherit his entire fortune. The son’s started the race and gradually slowed down to a complete stop, not knowing what to do and uncertain on how to even complete the race.

A passing traveler came upon them and hearing their story offered them some advice. Whereupon, the two sons jumped on the horses and raced as fast as they could to the finish line. What was the advice?
