Washington Classic Car Owners: New Collector Vehicle Insurance Requirement Now in Effect

June 23, 2026

New Collector Vehicle Insurance Requirement

If you own a classic car, hot rod, vintage truck, or other collector vehicle in Washington state, there is an important insurance update to note.

Effective January 15, 2026, Washington motorists operating collector-plated vehicles on public roads must carry collector-specific insurance under Washington SSB 5127.

According to the Washington Department of Licensing, anyone applying for a new collector plate must provide:

  • Proof of vehicle ownership, unless the vehicle is already in the Department of Licensing records
  • A valid registration for a second vehicle used for daily driving, commuting, or business purposes
  • Proof of vehicle insurance

Vehicles with restored plates are also subject to the daily-use vehicle and insurance requirements.

Already have a collector plate? In most cases, you do not need to provide this documentation unless the Department of Licensing specifically requests it.

Why Collector Vehicle Insurance Matters

Collector vehicles are more than everyday transportation. They are passion projects, weekend cruisers, family keepsakes, and pieces of automotive history. As a result, a standard auto insurance policy may not provide the right type of protection.

A & M Insurance can help you review coverage options designed specifically for collector vehicles through Hagerty Insurance. Collector vehicle coverage may include:

  • Guaranteed Value coverage
  • Flexible usage options
  • Claims support from specialists who understand classic and enthusiast vehicles

Whether your vehicle is headed to a car show, out for a weekend cruise, or safely stored in the garage, the right policy can help protect your investment and keep you compliant with Washington’s updated requirements.
