The basic solution to the August Riddle “A town has 20,000 people in it. 5% are one-legged & one half of the other people go barefoot. How many shoes are needed?“: Is 20,000. Because 5% of 20,000 is 1,000 one legged which means 1,000 shoes. Half of the remaining 19,000 people is 9,500 have 2 feet and wear shoes. So 9,500 x2-=19,000. 19,000 shoes + 1,000 shoes= 20,000 shoes.
