Help us close the summer meal gap – 2013 Food Drive
April 12, 2013
A & M Insurance is partnering with Northwest Harvest
to run a food drive from May 7th through June 15th.
Children throughout our state will begin summer vacation in June. Although children look forward to the fun and freedom that time out of school brings, for a surprising number it also means missing meals. This is very concerning as mild malnutrition during the critical growth periods of childhood can stunt growth and impair brain development.
In fact, Renton School District reports show 4,027 or 57% of elementary students as of February are on the free or reduced lunch program. Many working families rely on these meal programs and are left struggling during the summer months to feed their children.
A & M wants to help our local kids. What types of food does Northwest Harvest need?
Northwest Harvest can use any nonperishable food or monetary donations. Did you know Northwest Harvest can feed a family of three one nutritious meal for just 67 cents? If you prefer to donate food, select shelf-stable food . Northwest Harvest buys white rice and beans in bulk, so we encourage you to donate other items. Here are some suggestions:
General food items:
Whole grain pastas
Brown rice
Tomato products
Canned vegetables
Canned fruit, especially with low sugar (but not artificial sweeteners)
Canned fish or meat
Shelf-stable milk
Beef stew, chili and similar meals with low sugar and saturated fats
Infant and baby foods:
Canned milk
Infant cereal
Jars of baby food
Powdered or canned milk
They also accept baby diapers
Bring in any donation during the drive and we will enter your name in a drawing to be held in June for a $25 Starbucks gift card.
