Method
1. Prepare the crust
- Preheat the oven to 325°F and lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
- Combine the flour, melted butter, and chopped pecans in a bowl. Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for approximately 25 minutes, then set the crust aside to cool completely. Be patient with this step—a fully cooled crust helps keep the creamy layers from melting or blending together.
Make the cream cheese layer
- Beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth and creamy. Gently fold in 8 ounces of the whipped topping.
- Carefully spread the mixture over the cooled pecan crust, reaching all the way to the edges.
Add the pudding layer
- Whisk the chocolate pudding mix and cold milk together until the mixture begins to thicken. Let it rest for a few minutes, then gently spread it over the cream cheese layer.
Finish and chill
- Spread the remaining whipped topping evenly over the pudding. Garnish with chopped pecans, chocolate shavings, or a light dusting of cocoa powder.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.
For the cleanest slices and best flavor, prepare it the night before and let it chill overnight.
